Habit : A small perennial herb, with tuberous globose corm. Leaves : Radical, larger, peltate, Dark green or pale-greenish-yellow, glabrous, cordate or sagittate with a large basal stem, petioles stout, sheathing. Inflorescence : Spadix Flowers : Spathes 25-40 cm long, pale-yellow or creamy-yellow, glabrous. Spadix shorter than spathes. Male flowers above, neuters in the middle, females below, spathe boat-shaped, caudate-acuminate, erect; pale yellow, wide open, spadix with a long appendage. Male anthers closely packed, stamens 3-8, ovaries 1-celled, ovules many on 5 parietal placenta, stigmas sessile. Fruit : Berries several, small, reddish-yellow or orange, angular. Flowering and fruiting Time : August - October Significance : It is extensively cultivated everywhere for its edible corms, leaves and fruits.
