Habit : A handsome, tall palm. Leaves : Leaves forming a crown on the top, very large, pinnate, leaflets many linear-lanceolate. Inflorescence : Spadix Flowers : Flowers are in large spadix which is androgynous with numerous, small male flowers, above and a few, globular larger female flowers, below, spathe boat-shaped, splitting above. Sepals 3, petals 3, valvate, stamens 6. Female flowers supported by broad bracteoles, sepals 3, petals 3, imbricate, ovary 3-celled but only one carpel develops into the fruit. Fruits : Drupe fibrous, large, obovoid. Seed with white endosperm, brown testa and full of liquid endosperm- the coconut milk. Flowering and Fruiting Time : All the year round. Significance : One of the most important plants of great economic importance. Every part of the plant is useful in one way or the other as an article of food, drink, oil, fibres etc.
