Habit : A tall shrub, branches green-brown with prominent lenticels. Leaves : Alternate, stipulate, panduriform or fiddle-shaped, cordate at base, where there are 3-4 glandular teeth on each side, smooth, dark green above, pale or purplish tinged below. Inflorescence : Terminal corymbose cymes. Flowers : Monoecious or dioecious, pink. Male flowers calyx small, cup shaped, imbricate, 5-lobed, purplish-red, petals 5, scarlet or pink, obovate, twisted, stamens 8-10, monadelphous, red, 4-5 short, anthers reddish-yellow, hastate, disk 5-lobed. Female flowers sepals and petals same as male flowers, ovary 3-celled, styles 3, bifid, recurved. Fruits : Capsule purplish-green in colour, seeds 3. Flowering and Fruiting Time : September-December Significance : Cultivated in gardens everywhere.
