Habit : A scandant, deciduous climbing shrub, climbs by means of hard, hook-like petioles of fallen leaves. Leaves : Elliptic, acuminate, upper opposite, lower alternate, entire, base subcordate. Inflorescence : Drooping spikes. Flowers : White at first, changing into orange, pink and red, bracts ovate. Calyx-tube green and slender about 3 in. long, above the ovary, teeth 5, deciduous. Petals 5, white changing to pink-red, ovate-oblong, alternating with calyx-teeth, episepalous. Stamens 10, episepalous. Ovary ovate-oblong, ovules 4, style filiform, exerted. Flowering and Fruiting Time : March - August Significance : Common in the gardens. It is one of the most profuse of bloomers and grows very quickly and luxuriantly.
